HISTORY
Alberto's lived a rather sheltered life for someone who's spent the past couple years without much shelter. As a sea monster, he grew up under the sea off the Ligurian coast in Italy, but ended up living above the surface on a small, uninhabited island with his father. An only child and ostensibly motherless, his father was Alberto's sole provider — that is, until the older sea monster decided the boy was old enough to take care of himself at the age of twelve, and abandoned him, leaving the child entirely isolated on the island. Nearly two years passed, Alberto all alone, trapped on the island merely by the hope that his father might change his mind and return someday.

An unexpected new friendship with another restless young sea monster boy, Luca, finally freed Alberto from his all-too-private island. Luca and Alberto hit it off right away, the younger boy charmed by Alberto's charisma, seemingly carefree life on land, and his obsession with human culture — though everything he knew about it was contrived observations from afar, little known to Luca. After sneaking off all day every day for a magical week of adventuring on the land together, Luca's parents sought to punish him for spending time with Alberto above the surface, and in order to help his friend evade punishment, Alberto proposed they run away to the nearby human town, a small fishing village called Portorosso with a history of hunting sea monsters, planning to live incognito and try to find a Vespa so the two boys could travel the world together, uninhibited. Helping Luca was just the catalyst that Alberto needed to help himself.

After befriending another misfit kid their age, a human girl named Giulia, and enrolling in a triathlon together, Luca and Alberto had a rougher time than they'd anticipated. They weren't as great at all this "human-ing stuff" as Alberto made it seem they would be. But after many twists and turns of tweenage troubles mixed with monster mayhem, all three children found the peace they'd been looking for all along. Alberto, for one, was invited to live with Giulia's dad, Massimo, once she and Luca moved away together to attend school far out of town, living in Genova with Giulia's mother. Having found a father figure in Massimo, Alberto chose to stay behind and build a new life for himself in Portorosso. The man helped him with basic life skills like cooking and fishing, employed him at his pescheria as a fisherman's apprentice and delivery boy, and put him up in Giulia's old bedroom in his humble home. Alberto struggled to make sense of Massimo's reticent nature, but admired the man deeply nevertheless, and sought to do the very best he could — despite many hiccups and a fair few explosions... Nothing that they couldn't fix together, though.

Everything Alberto learned while under Massimo's wing has set him up for success for life alone again here in Avalon, ironically giving him the skills his father never taught him: how to take care of himself. He's still not great at this human-ing stuff, and has a lot to learn — aaand there may still be a fair few explosions — but it's nothing he can't fix, whether on his own or with new friends.

He's gotten so much practice under his belt since arriving in Avalon and having to fend for himself, though, powered by the urge to show off to his new friends — especially those who have never even had pasta...! He's got gumption, if not technique. Maybe doesn't count for much in the kitchen, but hey. He's trying.
