However, growing up on the surface was not all so idyllic. He is the only child of a single father, an unnamed sea monster who raised Alberto in total isolation on an uninhabited island. As a child, Alberto was disallowed to leave the island, though his father traveled alone to the human towns and would tell Alberto all about it; he was only allowed to appreciate human culture from a safe distance. Similarly, he had very little contact with sea folk in the undersea village near their island, due to his father’s unconventional lifestyle on land essentially ostracizing them from their own kind. It seems Alberto knew next to no one except his father for the majority of his life... His isolation only deepened, then, when his father abandoned him and left him alone on the island around age twelve, claiming Alberto was old enough to take care of himself. Traumatized, inexperienced, and with nowhere safe to go, Alberto proceeded to spend the next two years entirely by himself on the island, waiting for the off-chance his father might come back. Eventually, he became obsessed with human Vespas as a symbol of freedom.
At long last, at age 14, Alberto found his opportunity to fulfill his dreams when he met his best friend Luca. Another curious young sea monster boy, Luca was also unlike others in his village due to his cautious fascination with life on the surface. When Alberto dragged him up onto his island to see it for himself, everything changed for the both of them. They formed an instant friendship, spending a wild and carefree week together on the surface, against Luca's parents' rules. To avoid punishment, the boys then ran away together to the human town, hoping to get their own Vespa. There, they befriended a quirky human girl their age, Giulia, and her stoic fisherman father, Massimo. These two became instrumental in changing the boys' life paths for the better.
Ultimately, Luca moved away to live with Giulia and her mother in Genova, after Alberto selflessly arranged for him to attend human school. Alberto, however, chose to stay behind and live with Giulia’s father in Portorosso, working in Massimo's pescheria. Despite many ups and downs in this endeavor, too, Alberto and Massimo formed a deep bond together, and Massimo became something of a father figure to his new adoptive sea monster son. In the end, the three children helped each other find exactly what they’d needed all along: freedom, adventure, and acceptance.
Everything Alberto learned while under Massimo's wing has set him up for success for life here in Kaisou, ironically giving him the skills his father never taught him: how to take care of himself. This time, though, he's not alone: he gets to fulfill his dreams of living with Luca in the human world, going on magical adventures here they could never have imagined back home. Alberto's still not great at this human-ing stuff, and has a lot to learn — aaand there may still be a fair few explosions — but it's nothing he can't fix, whether on his own or with friends.

It looks perfect to Alberto. Luisa even placed Alberto's figurine beside Bruno's. He almost cries sometimes when he looks at it too long now, but still keeps it proudly displayed on his desk. Getting hopped up on energy drinks while intentionally getting lost on random buses, hoping to end up in new parts of the city to try and find the coolest places there... And it's hands down the best birthday Alberto's ever had.

GOOSEGATE 🌊 🦢 Really made him take a hard look at himself in the mirror and ask some questions about how he's living his life... Punching a goose will do that, I guess.
KATSUKI 🦢 Katsuki tries to help, brings up the fact that Alberto is a sea monster, and things spiral south fast. Because of a bellybutton (or lack thereof).MIRABEL Advice on creative blocks between two struggling artists.
AUGUST Learning about the legal system...
AUGUST ...because adults are taking issue with the fact this kid got beaten up by a goose. And punched it.
AUGUST August is still kind enough to come over and heal Alberto's bruises with his magic, though.
LUCA 🦢 Luca is confused and not pleased by how Alberto's confrontation with Katsuki went down, but keeps his cool. All they can do is move forward and hope for the best. Not so unlike their MO their first week in Portorosso... which is scary. But Alberto won't say so outright.
LUZ After he and Luca decide Luz might be a good Humaning Tutor for them, Alberto decides to open up to her more and put her to the test. And it ends up being an incredibly fun, absorbing, and comforting conversation like he's never had...!

EDA Eda the Owl Lady just earned herself one loyal customer. Or at least a loyal lookie-lou. Sometimes she's nice enough to buy cool stuff from him, so it's a win-win.

LUCA AND BRUNO ...but all is forgiven when Luca is introduced. And Alberto is very eager to introduce Bruno. Either way, he's showing off the coolest person he knows to the other coolest person he knows. Lots of talk about the crazy fish lady in the Encanto, too, plus the boys quizzing Bruno on the exact mechanics of bad luck.
LUCA Life on land: "I'm getting a very strong urge... to buy stuff."
BRUNO Things Bruno probably did not imagine saying tonight, past midnight: "It sounds like he was a terrible person who deserved to be shoved into a fountain." "Wait. Wait wait wait wait, you rode it off a cliff?" "Alberto, please don't fight an ostrich."

Massimo taught him a few key things, and he's an attentive student even when he's just observing, but, uh... th-that doesn't mean there aren't regular explosions in his kitchen. He's learned a lot and has a decently stocked kitchen for a fourteen-year-old! He's gotten so much practice under his belt since arriving in Kaisou and having to fend for himself, though. He's fond of experimenting and feels powered by the urge to show off to his new friends — especially those who have never even had pasta...! Thankfully, his friends are willing to teach him about safe food handling, too... He's got gumption, if not technique. Maybe doesn't count for much in the kitchen, but hey. He's trying.RATS...?
Rats count as an interest, right? Sure. Three guesses whose influence this is. Two of Bruno's rats also happen to have the same names as Luca's parents, so something feels weirdly kismet. Seems like the ideal pet to Alberto: they're cute and soft, they're free to go where they like, and they don't attack you... Cats, take note.SPANISH LANGUAGE
Alberto's taken a real shine to studying Spanish. The mutual intelligibility between Spanish and Italian tickles him to no end, especially having never even heard of Spanish at all before arriving in Kaisou. He first started casually learning while living with Bruno in April, essentially creating their own pidgin together Alberto calls "Itañol." Since then, he's only become more studious with it, especially now that he and Luca are taking a proper Spanish class in middle school. So as the boys study together, "Itañol" is once again spoken in the home. He and Luca practice their Spanish with Bruno and the other Madrigals, as well as Luz and Amity. And some of these friends are picking up some Italian in turn!SUPERSTITIONS
Chiefly superstitions involving warding off bad luck. Under Bruno's inadvertent guidance, Alberto's always open to learning new "tricks" to prevent bad luck. Staunch in his position that he doesn't need any good luck charms, just anti-bad luck charms. He figures there's no need to be greedy — he's lucky enough on his own! Apart from... all the bad luck... But when that's gone, he'll be in the clear.MUSIC
Alberto's always liked music, even had a radio on the island; he loved listening to opera with Massimo back home, and spent a lot of money on the jukebox in the bar in the few weeks he lived in Portorosso — even got banned from using it after climbing up and dancing on it... But now? He can listen to any music he wants for free at any time in Kaisou — talk about a "Magic Singing Lady Machine...!" His smart phone will never not astound him. He's still very fond of music that sounds like home, old mid-century Italian pop and jazz, even dipping into English language pop and jazz of the same eras, but he's also modernizing his tastes slowly — the biggest hits being Madonna and ABBA... very modern. Nothing will ever trump opera in his book, but he's broadening his music tastes just like any modern teenager in the US.FILM AND TELEVISION
Alberto is still fascinated by movies from their own home, but now having branched out: his love for Roman Holiday led him to other Audrey Hepburn films, as his love for Marcello Mastroianni led him to Fellini films, and so on... He does enjoy some media for kids his age, such as the kids' comedy show "iCarla", but it's harder to watch without a modern TV or laptop. He and Luca own a tiny old television with a VCR, so Alberto always keeps his eyes out for VHS tapes at yard sales and pawn shops and the like. They've built a small collection, their prized jewels being a couple cassettes of the Twilight Zone and the box set of Carl Sagan's Cosmos: A Personal Voyage.FASHION
Gaining some sense slowly but surely as he dresses himself in modern America — adventurous on a tight budget... Shops almost strictly secondhand, typically at thrift stores, garage sales, and flea markets. After Luz gave Alberto and Luca pointers on human fashion, Alberto's felt emboldened to put more effort into his outfits. It's a hit or miss, still just as risky as always, but he's building his own style. And looks more or less like a normal human. He'd look even more human if he'd stop doodling all over his arms, fingernails, and jean pants with colored markers, but school is just so boring...! The Sharpie "tattoos" just add to the look.
