Okay. I think I got that. Hands on experience is gonna make a difference though.
[He learns best through experience and he stubbornly won't give up until he's perfected something. Which is how he's so ridiculously skilled at so many things.
He eyes the pants in his hands and shifts them so the seam he needs is easy to access. Then he's waiting to see what Alberto is describing in action so he can follow suit. Completely focused and... honestly this is probably the quietest the two of them have been in the same space before. They're both kind of loud and energetic people.]
[Luca's feeling something very similar to what Alberto was at this moment. He'd been so happy, especially with the second one, and so excited knowing Alberto felt that way. Now he's standing there as Alberto looks them over, knowing that the one that likely wasn't real was the one that Alberto handed him as he checked the mail. The one that had gotten him so excited and sent his heart racing. His face falls when Alberto finally says it. He didn't write this.]
Oh.
[Suddenly feeling cold and disappointed, he looks at the cards in his hands. There's the one he wrote, and then...the other one wasn't written by him, but strangely the words match how he feels exactly. He bites his lip for a moment, not wanting to give Alberto the same feeling of disappointment especially since he realizes that this one, the one Alberto said he liked better, was the one he liked better. Which...does that mean he feels the same way? Assuming the answer to that is yes, Luca decides to take a chance.]
I didn't write this one...but what it says is exactly what I feel.
[This is probably a weird Kaisou thing, which, if the card that was 'from' Luca was that accurate, maybe that means.]
[ Alberto feels inordinately proud that he just made a great human-ing joke and even a human didn't catch it. Like he's getting so good at this he's out-human-ing the humans... ...Or maybe he just didn't account for the lack of triathlons and modern sports competitions in the Encanto, ahem. Still, even without knowing the term, Isabela still hit the mark: Ercole is a sore winner. And Alberto feels vindicated to have turned so many strangers against Ercole, even though they're all enemies who'll likely never meet this boy. Should they all be so lucky... Still, he feels a certain self-satisfaction in this moment about how far he's come in his human-ing skills since first meeting Ercole, the first human he ever met, compared to now, shit-talking him in a big city with Isabela and making plans for the human holidays. Ercole can stuff it. Alberto and Luca are great at this human-ing thing! ]
Yeah, Ercole's the stupidest, craziest, childishest guy I know, for sure. You're lucky you've never met him, signora. I know you guys had bullies in the Encanto, too, but— pffft. I miss a lot about home, but not him, hah. If Christmas is about having parties with your friends and family and neighbors, then we can be extra glad he's not our neighbor here. Ha!
Yeaahhh! Pretty glad that I won’t have to run into the guy in this city or have him as a nosy neighbor. Otherwise he is just as insufferable as the fish lady in the encanto. You could even say that not having Ercole around in the city can be considered as one of the greatest gifts one can have this season.
(While taking another sip of espresso, Isabela is thinking of a possible scenario where she and Alberto not so subtly throwing desserts at Ercole mercilessly at a Christmas party in Casita while he whines like a bratty child. Oh what a sight to behold.)
Not exaaactly? More like, whoever wants to buy the people's stuff just show up at their house whenever the people say the sale will start. If you get there early, like really early, you'll be in the front of the line, so you'll get to look at everything before everyone else buys all the good stuff. That's how you gotta do it.
[ He's got a whole method to all this and everything... He seems so smitten with himself, though, smirking as he brags about his "livelihood," even as he keeps holding Pepa's hand, slightly swinging their arms together as they walk in step. He makes an idle point to keep falling in step with her, like a little game by himself while happily chatting as they stroll along toward the toy shop. ]
Mah, di certo. S'just practice. Lots of practice. It took me a while after my dad taught me. But at least you've got lots of pants, right? Ha.
[ Those tiny tells Alberto's good for... He means to make a wry joke, but it stands to reason, even with as little as he's revealed about his childhood or upbringing, yeah, Alberto probably didn't have a lot of spare clothes to practice on, growing up. Reasons unclear, but still fair enough logic. Sea monster on land and all...
Alberto leans forward to grab a seam ripper for Katsuki from the supplies he'd gathered, only to realize he'd forgotten to grab one. So with that worrying wry joke, he finds excuse to bolt and smooth right over it, jumping up out of his seat to dash over to his workspace again. From a jar crammed with paint brushes, he produces... a steak knife. He runs back over to their spot in the cushions, totally unnecessary in such a small flat, and uh, when carrying a knife. But he plops down with it just as carelessly as one might expect of Alberto. Listless as he is, it seems he's getting his spark back bit by bit the more time he spends with Katsuki today. He hands the knife over, blade first, thinking nothing of it. ]
[ Alberto looks to Luca with wide eyes and raised brows, seemingly surprised at the way that question trailed off doubtfully. The look on Luca's face doesn't help. It doesn't take him a second thought to answer, no filter as usual. ]
What? Of course that's how I feel! That's exactly how I feel. That's what makes this weird. I couldn't have said it better myself even if I'd said it myself...!
[ He waves the card in the air emphatically, trying to force a wry smile on and crack a sort of joke to diffuse some of this tension. Alberto just assumed Luca knew he felt all those things, so he never bothered to admit it. But to him, it doesn't even feel like an admission, that would imply something secret about his feelings, or some fear that speaking so outright will be "too much" and end in rejection, like most kids their age may feel if their crush got outed. To Alberto, for all his complex rejection issues, the feelings described in that little love letter are just the plain facts of his life with Luca. He's got so little understanding of romance that these feelings aren't under the same pressure as they might normally be; this is just how he feels about Luca and surely Luca knows all this already. He figures that his affections must all be as plain to everyone else as it is to him, assuming it's so obvious that it needn't be said. He can be a little socially blind, still, for as well adjusted as he's become, still getting accustomed to not being alone anymore in many ways; people can't read his mind. And sometimes it's just nice to hear nice things from the people you love. Just like Alberto loved hearing what Luca said in both his cards, maybe Luca would like to hear Alberto say these things more, too.
...But until Alberto gets over the shock of hearing what he didn't say, it'll take a moment to connect those dots and learn from this. They're getting there, they're getting there... ]
Yes, everyone likes to give gifts on Christmas a lot. I guess that the Christmas gifts can be like birthday gifts. For example, someone wished for a piece of clothing or toy for their birthday but for whatever reason, that didn’t happened. So the giver would surprise them with the thing they have been wanting for some time.
Like a delayed birthday gift wrapped in the holiday spirit perhaps?
[Even though this whole thing is weird and creepy, having the confirmation that Alberto's card is exactly how he feels makes Luca feel a rush of excitement again. Also relief, since he didn't just confess that his was how he really felt for nothing.]
Oh good. Because the card I didn't write is exactly how I felt, but written better, too.
[ Alberto feels that giddiness swell in his chest again, too. Luca's relative calmness about this, compared to Alberto's, is also calming in itself. It helps ground Alberto some, the way Luca is more keen to focus on the happy side of all this, rather than the "what-the-shell" crazy creepy magic side. What was said was true, and that's the important part. Still sitting on the kitchen table, Alberto looks to Luca with an odd, searching look, before a soft smile spreads over his face, too, feeling a wave of relief of his own. ]
...Yeah. Heh. Good.
[ He pauses, just smiling at Luca affectionately for a second. Yeah — this is fine. His excitement overrides the creepiness. As far as crazy magic stuff goes, he can live with this one. Or at least worry about it later. Right now he's just happy to know he and Luca both feel that excited, tingly feeling around each other, especially when they touch — he wasn't sure if that was just him or what, but even though he'd never bothered to mention it, for some reason it makes his heart soar learning that they both feel it. He crinkles his eyes fondly at him, then, as he reaches out and places a hand on Luca's shoulder just for the sake of it. Something so mindless that he does all the time, but now feels more— intentional? Which just heightens that giddy, tingly, warm feeling all the more. Alberto, in typical Alberto fashion, still tries to play it cool, though. ]
[Luca smiles, blushing a little when Alberto puts his hand on his shoulder, even though it's something Alberto does all the time. For some reason it makes it even more exciting knowing Alberto is doing that knowing how it makes Luca feel, and knowing it makes Alberto feel the same way.]
Yeah, maybe.
[Okay, Luca very much doubts that they wrote these in their sleep, but he also doesn't feel like questioning things now. Instead, he decides to return Alberto's gesture by leaning in closer and wrapping an arm around Alberto's waist.]
[Every time they touch on Alberto's childhood, Katsuki gets the sense that it's a giant can of worms. These little details sprinkled throughout their interactions sure paint an interesting and kind of sad picture even without the whole story.
He eyes the knife being held out and, in typical Katsuki fashion, can't just leave details like that lay. He's careful taking it, but makes sure to point out;]
Never offer the sharp end like that. Someone isn't looking, they'll get hurt grabbing for it. Shouldn't run with sharp shit either.
[Little things. But important. And the kind of details he pays attention to. But he doesn't harp on it or raise his voice like he has in the past correcting Alberto. He's come a long way since that day in the woods of Stardew Valley. Still firm and gruff in tone, but he's not yelling now.
He does as he's instructed, tip of the blade catching a seam and popping the stitch.]
I do. But this is fun work. My job back home was way harder~ In my friend's dad's pescheria. I was a fisherman, Signora! Did Bruno ever tell you that?
[ He swings their hands slightly, seeming more chipper to raise the topic. He hasn't ever mentioned it to her himself, but he has no idea what Bruno may share behind his back. Alberto talks about Bruno all the time, after all. ]
[ Alberto stares at him with a curious look on, but it's almost clear he's absorbing this piece of advice. It's a good point, which he'd never thought about. The running with sharp shit rule he knew. Has no intention of following. But duly noted.
Alberto watches as Katsuki gets to ripping the seam, then grabs the needle and thread off the table while Katsuki's at it, preparing to show Katsuki the next step. He unravels a long string off the spool, but rather than getting up and going to get some scissors, or just waiting for the knife, Alberto instead just... gnaws the thread with his teeth to cut it off the spool. A means to an end. He's, uh, surprisingly proficient at it, too. Oy va voy. ]
[ It feels like an incredibly wise choice to have asked Katsuki to be their chaperone for this mission. It sounded exciting, first of all — everyone knows Alberto and Luca love a good race — but it so happened that fortune smiled on them, because Katsuki was born in the Year of the Horse. So his animal for the race is, you know, useful... He has a sled and a massive beast of burden. Whereas Luca and Alberto have a, uh, a rooster... and a monkey... Once again, as it's been proven so many times already: without Katsuki, the boys would have been doomed.
They're only a couple days into the trek, but even their first day, Alberto was keenly aware of how lucky they were to be on Katsuki's team. Plus, you know, all his cool explode-y powers and fighting expertise and such. Alberto's been going to his fight club for a while now, and while he's learned a lot from Katsuki about hand-to-hand combat, he doesn't have magic powers. He and Luca can't shoot fireballs, or explode things with their minds, or turn invisible, or whip out crazy vines and carnivorous plants... or cast spells and fly around on a staff, or control magical goop, or make themselves rubbery, or gain super-strength super-cat-powers... or all the other crazy magical things all their friends can do. Even more subtle powers, like if their cooking could heal you, or super-hearing, or their moods affecting the weather, traveling between shadows, even talking to rats...! He wouldn't want to see people's futures, or people's pasts, both sound awful, but jeez, out of everything else all their friends can do? Alberto would at least settle for a nice chat with a rat! But he and Luca are just... normal. Well, maybe not normal, but not magical. They've got about one trick up their sleeve. Luca's the only other person he knows who's normal(-ish) like him, so, there's that at least — whatever that's worth... Being magic seems the far better option, though; if he could, he would. Alberto's felt so motivated to make himself useful in tough scenarios, ever since Isabela had to save his butt with her flowers back in October when rescuing Bruno together. But without any magic... it's hard. So this monkey's monkey business better help make up for their normalness! Luca's rooster— Alberto has doubts about... Luca might have to pick up the slack for it instead.
They've gotten their winter gear down pat by now, and came well-prepared with snow gear and food and camping supplies. It's impressive how much camping supplies they own, for two eighth-grade boys... How do they own so many things? Or, perhaps a better question— Why do they own so many things? Last year when he moved to Stardew, Alberto lived with three adults, and he was the only one who thought to bring any food or kitchenware...? He feels particular pride in that. Bruno just brought rats. So Alberto's extra determined to be on top of this mission; he's older, wiser, a man of action now! Yeah! Not over-compensating for any insecurity at all... And even if he is: eh, if they make it out of this unscathed, it's worth it.
They're leaving the first lodge they'd encountered, ready to get back on the trail. It's early morning, Luca's rooster having woke them up at the crack of dawn — one useful thing it can do, at least. Alberto's not... overly thrilled about that contribution to the group effort... But he's not one to talk. Because his monkey is presently causing him problems as he tries to load up their sled with food and other supplies they've restocked here. As soon as he puts one thing in, the monkey throws another out. Just to be spiteful, maybe? That's Alberto's interpretation. As he fights with his monkey, the two of them oddly mirrored, scrambling back and forth trying to predict each other's movements like a cartoon stand-off, he calls out to Katsuki and Luca. ]
Hey, uh, a little help here, guys?!
[ The monkey chitters shrilly (is it laughing at him, um...?!) and starts hopping up and down on the back of the sled, as if gleefully. Alberto waves his arms exasperatedly at it, raising his voice lamentingly. ]
This mission is for you, you know! We're here to protect you! Stop throwing your own food away, mamma mia...!
[ They're clearly off to a great start... Bless Katsuki and bless Katsuki's horse. ]
Edited (a million thanks again for your patience and flexibility! ; 3 ; ♥ ♥ ♥) 2023-04-25 17:20 (UTC)
[Just more of those weird little mannerisms. This one's harmless and Katsuki knows how to pick his battles on this kind of thing. If only he'd learn to pick his battles when it came to... actual battles.
That does bring him to a question though, seemingly out of the blue.]
Do you guys have to brush your teeth?
[Because... I mean... coming from the ocean and all... but maybe sea monsters invented their own little underwater toothbrushes. He doesn't know, okay?]
[ Alberto's wetting the end of his thread (by just sticking it directly in his mouth) to prepare it to go through the needle when Katsuki poses the question, and it catches him off-guard, freezing with the thread on his tongue and looking at Katsuki with raised brows. But after a second, he cracks a grin, amused by this question, and goes ahead threading the needle clumsily as he replies. ]
...Heh. I mean, do you, really? Ha! But no. We never did before. We do now, sometimes, but... That's just cuz we like it, ha.
Oooh, okay. Like it's everyone's birthday. You get them stuff they want — or stuff you think they'd like. I can do that! I'm great at that.
[ He... has very little experience with gift-giving. But he threw Luca a birthday party, that was fun! And he made tons of gifts for Bruno — moooostly rat-related arts and crafts. But all the same. He gets the gist, and thinks he can do a bang-up job of that. He'll have to start plotting what to get everyone... ]
Yeah, that is definitely the point. Christmas gift giving is always expected to to happen, anyone can send in gifts for anybody. Even people and businesses have these secret Santa gift exchanges like the one that the flower shop I’m working for is going to host for the employees.
[ When Luca leans in and wraps his arm around Alberto's waist, he also blushes as a wide grin spreads over his face, a warm, playful glint in his eyes. He pulls Luca in closer by wrapping his arm around his shoulder, but with Alberto sitting on the tabletop like this, it leaves them at the perfect angle for Alberto to give Luca an affectionate little noogie... so of course that's what he does, tussling his hair gently. Again, more of their usual friendly jabs and gestures, but now feels so much more exciting somehow, knowing they both feel that electric, fuzzy, buzzing feeling when they get close. And one of Alberto's operating philosophies in life so far is most definitely if you like something, do more of it. Even after he musses up Luca's hair teasingly, he still stays close to him and keeps his hand on his head, smiling down at him almost knowingly. ]
Hehe~ ...Oh, well — as far as creepy magic crap goes here, at least this is nice creepy magic crap, I guess...
[ He smirks his usual smug smirk, always reaching for a quip, a light laugh laced through his voice, but there's something far fonder in his eyes than usual. After a beat, while he's talking, he idly fixes Luca's hair, repositioning what Alberto's tussling had messed up, so Luca's curls are perfectly in place again. Polite and considerate of him to undo his own noogie — aaand also an excuse to keep touching him. Two for two. ]
